What is Kevlar used for?

It was invented at DuPont in 1965, and it shows up everywhere: ballistic body armor, tires, brake pads, fiber-optic cables, and protective clothing.

Everything I'd read going into this job said Kevlar's main real-world value was bulletproof vests. In practice, I've never ordered a single vest. What I've ordered, and reordered, is Kevlar-reinforced gloves, arm sleeves, and aprons for our metal fabrication and maintenance crew. The size chart looks standard, but you have to check seam construction (serged vs. taped), whether cuffs and hood are elasticated (they should be for most jobs), and the specific use labels on the package. Looking back, I should have asked the vendor for a sample before I ordered 200 units of what turned out to be the right garment for paint—but not for the light chemical splash work our crew actually needed. Is DuPont Tyvek the best waterproof fabric?

I'm not 100% sure "best" is even the right frame for this question. Tyvek is water-resistant—water beads up and runs off the surface (the surface acts more like a film than a fabric)—but it's also breathable, meaning water vapor can escape. That combination is exactly why it's used for protective coveralls and building wrap. But if "waterproof" means sealed against sustained water pressure or full immersion, that's a different product category entirely.

Per FTC advertising guidance (ftc.gov), any "waterproof" claim has to be substantiated, and the same discipline should apply to your purchasing decision. Define the exposure first: incidental splash, two-hour downpour, or standing water? For our crew painting outdoor equipment, Tyvek coveralls were exactly right. For a water intrusion repair in a utility chase, the maintenance team used fully coated materials instead. Same word, different performance requirement. Knowing that difference will save you more than any spec sheet reading session.

How does Tyvek compare to the coated canvas used in luxury totes (e.g., Celine)?

This looks like an odd search pairing, but it comes up often enough that it's worth answering directly. The coated canvas used in high-end totes—like the Celine canvas bags you see around—is typically a dense cotton canvas laminated with a PVC or acrylic finish. It's heavy, stiff, highly abrasion-resistant, and structured. Tyvek is none of those things: it's extremely lightweight, crinkly, and more vulnerable to puncture from a sharp point.

They get compared because both materials are water-resistant and both look like fabric without being traditionally woven. But that's where the overlap ends. Coated canvas uses a thick polymer shell over a woven base so the bag holds its shape and survives years of daily use. Tyvek uses thin bonded polyethylene fibers to make a lightweight barrier. A luxury tote in Tyvek would feel like a disposable express mailer; a Tyvek coverall in coated canvas would be too stiff to move in. Same family of properties, completely different physics.

What is DuPont rigid insulation and when do you actually need it?

Rigid insulation is stiff foam board used in walls, roofs, and below-grade foundations. The DuPont XPS board I've ordered (extruded polystyrene, i.e., closed-cell foam) has an R-value of roughly 5 per inch, which is very good—but its defining feature is low water absorption. Fiberglass and mineral wool absorb moisture and lose insulating performance when they get wet. XPS stays dry and keeps working, which is why it's the go-to for exterior or below-grade installations.

We nearly went with 2-inch board; the 3-inch version delivered a noticeably better thermal break for a surprisingly small cost difference. What should you verify before placing a bulk order for any of these materials?

Three checks I now run on every DuPont line item, thanks to experience that was not cheap:

  • Lot traceability. DuPont materials carry lot or batch markings on packaging. If there's a recall or a worker-safety investigation, that number is the difference between tracing one production run and panicking.
  • Physical sample performance. A spec sheet is a starting point, not a guarantee. Hand a coverall sample to the person who'll actually wear it. Install a piece of insulation board in the exact wall condition it'll face. Test before you buy.
  • Lead time. Don't hold me to this, but our Tyvek coverall lead time roughly doubled between 2023 and 2024. Order when you have three weeks of stock left, not when you're down to three days.

None of this shows up on a data sheet. It's the practical side of buying that matters when a supplier misses a window and your maintenance crew gives you that "well?" look. An informed buyer asks better questions, and better questions mean fewer emergency orders—which is the whole game.
