If You Can't Name the Fiber, You Can't Trust the Fabric Price
If a supplier can't tell me exactly what's in the material—not just polyester or nylon or coated, but the actual construction, finish, and performance limits—then the quote is already too high, no matter what the number says.
That may sound aggressive. I mean it to be. I coordinate emergency orders for fabric buyers, and in five years I've handled more than 200 rush orders—probably 214, give or take; I'd have to pull the log. Missing a deadline can mean a lost customer, a failed product, or a $50,000 penalty. The biggest hidden cost I've seen is rarely the price. It's the vague specification hiding inside the price.
Most buyers focus on per-yard cost and completely miss coating type, fiber identity, finish, and test data. It took me five years and some expensive failures to understand that what's not included matters more than the quote.
A PTFE Coating Is Not a Specification. PTFE Coating DuPont Comes Closer.
The request arrives all the time. Someone types ptfe coating dupont into a search box because they've seen the phrase on a spec sheet. Or they simply ask for PTFE coating and expect the same result. They are not the same.
PTFE is a fluoropolymer resin discovered at DuPont in 1938 and commercialized under the Teflon brand. According to DuPont's heritage archive, the discovery changed materials science. But Teflon is not one recipe. Resin weight, carrier chemistry, curing temperature, add-on level, and base fabric preparation all change the final performance. The name PTFE tells you the polymer family; it does not tell you what was applied to the fabric or how it will behave.
In plain English: a generic PTFE coating can look identical in a sample book and fail after a few wash cycles. A PTFE coating that follows the DuPont chemistry comes with defined expectations. I'm not saying every generic coating is bad. I'm saying PTFE alone isn't enough information to quote, purchase, or trust. When a supplier hides that information, the savings are an illusion.
Fabric Names Are Clues, Not Complete Answers
DuPont's history has left another mark on the fabric world: a vocabulary of brand names that feel like definitions. If you've ever searched fabric introduced by DuPont crossword clue, you know how many possibilities exist—Nylon, Dacron, Orlon, Lycra, Kevlar, Nomex, Tyvek, Cordura. Each name represents a real material, but each name only makes sense when you know the generic polymer, the physical form, and the intended application.
Take Kevlar. Kevlar is a para-aramid fiber, but cut-protection gloves, ballistic vests, and racing tires use different Kevlar variants. The brand name alone doesn't tell you the yarn denier, the weave, the coating, or the standard it meets. If you buy the brand without the specification, you're paying for the name and still haven't defined the product.
The same confusion exists outside DuPont. When someone asks what kind of material is modal fabric, the useful answer is that modal is a regenerated cellulose fiber, usually from beechwood pulp, with better wet strength than regular viscose. According to ISO 2076, modal is a generic fiber name for a high-wet-modulus cellulose fiber. That's a starting point, not a spec. A modal jersey from one mill can shrink differently than one from another because of yarn count, knit structure, dyeing, and finishing. If you only know modal, you don't know what you're buying.
From Linen Pants to Lunch Bags, the Spec Is the Hidden Fee
Let's apply this to everyday products. I've had to source men's white linen pants for a sample line on a tight deadline. It sounds simple. Linen is linen. But is it 100% linen or a blend? Pre-washed? What weight? What weave density? Does the supplier test for shrinkage and seam slippage? A white linen pant that looks perfect in a photo can be unwearable after one wash. If the supplier only says white linen pants, they haven't quoted a product. They've quoted a guess.
The same goes for polyester lunch bags. Two bags in the same catalog can both be called polyester lunch bags. One uses a 300-denier polyester face with a food-safe waterproof lining and a reinforced zipper. The other uses a thin polyester shell with a low-grade plastic liner that should not touch food. They can look identical in a product image. The difference is not in the name. It's in the specification—and the spec is exactly what a vague quote hides.
Here's the phrase I've learned to trust: What's included? The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end. Because the final bill isn't the invoice. It's the cost of returns, failures, re-orders, and lost time.
The Cost of Hiding the Spec: A Rush-Order Story
In March 2024, I got a call from a production manager who had approved a PTFE-like coated fabric to save money. The sample looked fine, but the client's lab found the water-repellent finish failed after two washes. The production run was scheduled to start in 36 hours. We found an approved PTFE coating from a mill that had test data on file, paid $800 in emergency freight, and re-planned the line. The original savings on the fabric was about $600. The rework, freight, and downtime cost close to $9,000. Missing that deadline would have also triggered a $50,000 penalty clause. The vendor with the lower initial quote was not the lower-cost vendor.
I still kick myself for an earlier mistake in 2022, when I approved a generic water-repellent coating without requiring a specific chemistry or test protocol. I was trying to save four percent for a client. The coating failed, the product had to be pulled, and the relationship took a hit. Four percent. I still can't believe it.
These experiences changed my routine. Now, when I'm triaging a rush order, I ask four questions before I ask price:
- What exactly is the fiber composition?
- What coating or finish is on it, and who supplies it?
- What performance data do you have?
- What is not included in the specification?
The Counterargument: What About the Brand Premium?
I hear the pushback before I finish the sentence: DuPont-branded materials cost more. That's the whole point. Sometimes they do. DuPont is not always the right answer for every application, and I don't insist on a brand just to feel safer. I've approved plenty of unbranded materials—but only after those materials were specified, tested, and documented to the same standard.
So please don't read this as always buy DuPont. Read it as always demand the specific, verifiable truth behind the material. If a generic supplier gives you a full polymer identity, test methods, tolerances, and a clear price breakdown, I'll take their quote seriously. If a branded supplier hides behind a big logo without data, I'll push back just as hard.
The issue is not brand versus generic. The issue is known versus unknown. A transparent price is a price you can verify. A transparent fabric spec is the same thing. Without both, you aren't making a purchasing decision. You're making a guess.

It took me five years and a few expensive lessons to get here. But now I'm sure: if you can't name the fiber, the coating, and the performance spec, you can't trust the price.
When someone quotes you a low price, ask what's not included. Ask for the generic construction behind the brand. Ask for the tests that were run. And if the supplier acts annoyed, you've just found the real hidden cost—because in an emergency, the last thing you need is an invoice that doesn't match the material.
