No. And this is the most expensive mistake I've made in this job.

DuPont Tyvek coveralls come in different grades — Tyvek 400, 800, and 1000 are the ones we order most. At a glance, they look nearly identical. The differences are in fabric structure, seam style, and the hazard classifications they're tested to. We supply fabric to an apparel client, so I went down this rabbit hole when deciding what claims to put on a label. Our wash tests showed 100% modal didn't evaporate sweat as quickly as a modal/polyester blend. Pure modal performed about the same as cotton in some tests — fine for comfort, but not what the marketing copy implied. The wrong way — the way I did it the first time — is to roll the paint on with a roller. I pushed pigment into the mesh openings and sealed them. The client's air permeability test failed, and a $1,200 batch (ugh, that number still stings) of custom mesh panels had to be redone.

The fix is straightforward once you know it: thin the paint, and apply light coats from a distance. We use a spray gun with fabric medium and water, holding the gun far enough back that the paint lands on top of the fibers instead of bridging across the openings. Two light coats with a 30-minute dry in between worked for us. The mesh stayed open, the color looked even, and the coating remained flexible after curing.

For a single item at home, the same principle applies: dilute the paint, apply thin passes, and test on a scrap piece first. Take Tyvek as an example. Tyvek is high-density polyethylene — technically a single polymer, which means it is recyclable through certain streams. But the infrastructure depends on the product type and your location. Used Tyvek suits from a job site aren't accepted in most residential recycling programs; they're usually handled through industrial channels. Describing that as simply "recyclable" overstates the reality.

Our standard for every supplier claim: what's the evidence, where's the report, and who's accountable if the claim is wrong? A vendor that can show third-party test data beats one that puts "eco-friendly" on the packaging with nothing behind it. And the supplier who tells you what isn't included — the limitations, the test gaps, the scenarios where the product doesn't perform — usually costs less in the long run. Transparency is a better trust signal than a polished sustainability page.
