The mistakes I keep seeing
If you order DuPont materials for a living — Tyvek, Kevlar, printable mesh fabric, webbing tape, any of it — this checklist is for you. I'm a material procurement specialist, handling specialty material orders for 8 years. I've personally made (and documented) 11 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $18,000 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team's checklist to prevent others from repeating my errors. Here are the 5 steps I run on every single order. Skipping any one of them has cost me real money.
Step 1: Confirm the exact product line — not just the brand
In my first year, 2017, I ordered "Tyvek" the way I'd order a coffee: one word, no thinking. Turns out Tyvek is a whole family of engineering materials, and the differences between product lines aren't cosmetic.
DuPont Tyvek homewrap is the product you see on residential construction sites. But there's also Tyvek weatherization membrane, Tyvek flashing tape for window openings, and several other variations. They differ in perm rating, thickness, and roll dimensions. Most Tyvek homewrap reviews online talk about installation ease and air resistance, which is helpful — but it's not the same as confirming the product code for your specific wall assembly.
I said "Tyvek." They heard "the standard construction Tyvek." Result: a $2,100 order of the right brand, wrong product, with a perm rating that didn't match our climate zone. Every roll went back.
Checkpoint: Can you write down the exact product code from DuPont's technical datasheet? Not the trade name — the code. If you can't, stop before you order.
Step 2: Know what webbing tape is, and put numbers on "heavy duty"
Webbing tape is a narrow woven flat fabric — usually polyester, nylon, or polypropylene — used for strapping, load restraint, and any job that needs a flat strap holding tension. That part, everyone agrees on.
The problem is when requirements get vague. I once ordered "heavy duty webbing tape" for a client who makes industrial lifting slings. We were using the same words but meaning different things. I meant 2-inch polyester with around 4,500 lbs breaking strength. They delivered 1-inch polypropylene rated for roughly 800 lbs. We discovered the mismatch when the first load test snapped the strap on camera.
The specs that actually matter:
- Material: polyester and nylon stretch differently, and polypropylene degrades under UV exposure
- Width: standard sizes run from 1/2" to 4" — but never assume
- Breaking strength: in lbs or kN, not "strong"
- Elongation at break: way more important than most buyers think
Checkpoint: Is the material, width, and breaking strength written on the PO? Write them twice if you have to. I do — once on the PO, once in the confirmation email. That habit alone caught two wrong specs last year.
Step 3: If you're printing on mesh fabric, test the real combination first
Printable mesh fabric seems simple until it isn't. I once ordered 250 promotional mesh banners, checked the file, approved a digital proof, and sent the job to print. We caught the issue when the first roll came off the press and ink flaked off under light bending. The fabric was uncoated, and the ink wasn't formulated for that substrate. 250 pieces, $890, straight to the trash.
The process I use now:
First, verify the coating. Some printable mesh fabrics are specifically coated to accept dye-sublimation or eco-solvent inks. If the datasheet doesn't mention ink compatibility, ask. Don't assume.
Second, print a physical sample with your actual ink, on your actual printer, before you approve the production run. It adds a day. That's one day versus an $890 reprint. The math isn't close.
Third, set color expectations early. The surprise wasn't the price of the ink — it was how much confidence I placed in a proof that couldn't show me the final result. Mesh is an open weave. Colors don't read on mesh the way they read on coated paper or vinyl. Pantone's Color Bridge gives you a target for CMYK conversion, but the printed result still varies by substrate. For brand-critical colors, the industry standard is Delta E below 2, but on a porous fabric you need a physical sample to see what's actually achievable.
And while we're on print files — a quick math refresher that saves a ton of back-and-forth: maximum print size in inches equals the pixel dimension divided by the DPI. A 3000 × 2000 pixel image at 300 DPI prints at 10 × 6.67 inches. If you need a bigger banner, the DPI drops — or the image needs more pixels. For banners viewed from 6 feet away, 150 DPI is typically fine. For up-close work, 300 DPI at final size is the safe number.
Checkpoint: Do you have a physical sample printed with the exact ink, printer, and substrate combination? If the answer is "we approved a PDF," that's a no.
Step 4: Kevlar is not one thing — specify the grade
This one still stings. I specified "Kevlar" for a subwoofer cone project, feeling pretty confident about it. Everyone's heard of Kevlar, right?
Kevlar is a brand name for para-aramid fiber, and there are multiple grades — Kevlar 29, Kevlar 49, Kevlar 149, plus purpose-specific variants. They differ in tensile modulus, elongation at break, and density. For a subwoofer cone, stiffness-to-weight ratio is the whole game. The wrong grade means the cone flexes at the wrong frequencies, and the acoustic performance falls apart.
We discovered that when our prototype failed a frequency sweep — the cone resonated where it should have been acoustically dead. The grade we'd ordered was optimized for ballistic applications, not for acoustic stiffness. That mistake cost us a 3-week delay and the awkward job of explaining to the client why our kevlar subwoofer didn't work.
Don't hold me to the exact acoustics terminology — I'm a procurement guy, not an audio engineer — but the lesson is universal: brand names don't carry enough information for a material spec. Write the exact grade. Check the datasheet's physical properties against the application requirement. If you can't do that, get someone on the call who can.
Checkpoint: Does the order specify the exact Kevlar grade, not just the name? Does that grade's datasheet match the mechanical needs of your application?
Step 5: Get logo usage rights in writing before you print
This step is about the DuPont logo specifically, but it applies to any brand mark on your packaging.
We didn't have a formal approval process for brand marks at the time. Cost us when we printed 1,000 units of a client's training packaging and referenced the DuPont logo as the material brand story. The client's legal team flagged it — we had no written authorization to use the logo. The whole run was scrapped and reprinted without the mark.
The DuPont name and logo are registered trademarks. Using them in a way that implies endorsement or partnership requires written permission from the brand holder or an authorized distributor. A verbal "should be fine" is not authorization. This is the most expensive lesson on this list, and it had nothing to do with the materials themselves.
Checkpoint: Do you have documented authorization for every brand mark on the piece? If your answer is "I think so," you don't have it.
The mistakes I keep seeing
These four patterns show up over and over, in my own orders and in the messes other teams ask me to fix:
- "Standard" and "heavy duty" are not specs. Add numbers.
- A digital proof is not a physical sample. Especially on mesh.
- A brand name is a product family, not a product. Always drop down to the product code and grade.
- Approvals belong in writing, before you spend money. Not after.
Bottom line: 5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction. A checklist is the cheapest insurance I've bought in this job. I wish I'd run one before the first order, not after the eleventh mistake.
