Nylon vs Polyester: A DuPont Sourcing Buyer's Honest Comparison
I've spent the last 11 years sourcing technical fabrics for a small manufacturer. The most expensive mistake came from treating nylon and polyester like they were basically the same material.

They're both synthetic fibers, but their molecular structures point them in different directions. This comparison is about those differences, and about the times I learned them by failing.
Nylon structure vs. polyester structure: why they behave differently
Nylon is a polyamide. Its repeating amide groups form hydrogen bonds between polymer chains, giving it a flexible, forgiving structure that can absorb moisture without falling apart. Polyester—specifically PET, or polyethylene terephthalate—has ester groups and a benzene ring in its backbone. That ring makes polyester stiffer and more hydrophobic. It doesn't drink water the way nylon does.
DuPont introduced nylon at the 1939 World's Fair. Polyester came a couple of years later from British chemists Whinfield and Dickson. Those different starting points matter. Nylon was designed for strength and elasticity. Polyester was designed to be dimensionally stable and resistant to wind, water, and wrinkling.
Everything I'd read said you can identify either fiber with a burn test or a magnifying glass. In practice, I held a black 840-denier nylon webbing and a black 840-denier polyester webbing side by side and could not tell them apart without a test. The molecular structure is the only reliable starting point.
Moisture and comfort: don't trust the fiber name alone
Conventional wisdom says nylon is more comfortable because it's softer and more absorbent. In practice, that's not always true. Nylon absorbs more moisture than polyester, which can make it feel clammy next to skin. Polyester dries faster and often feels more breathable in a tight weave. For activewear, polyester is usually the safer choice. For work gloves or industrial straps, nylon's slight moisture absorption can actually help the material mold to your hand.
I got a reminder of this in a completely different part of my life. My wife bought a Roller Rabbit duvet cover last spring. - Heat or chemical exposure? Check the melting point and coating compliance. Don't guess.
- Budget? Our 2024 supplier quotes showed polyester roughly 12% cheaper than same-denier nylon, on average. Verify current prices; commodity swings happen.
This is the list I wish I had in 2017. If I had used it, the outdoor furniture mistake never happens.
